Circular Economy at Kaikukatu

A major renovation project was carried out at the 1976 office building at Kaikukatu 3 in Sörnäinen, with Noste.io managing the project. A neighboring building from the same era had been set for demolition, but our client, Areim, chose redevelopment instead.

Noste.io’s project manager, Katri Eerola, explains that from the project’s kick-off, the goal was set to prioritize an environmentally conscious and resource-efficient renovation. Areim aims for carbon neutrality by 2030, and the architects embraced this vision, making it a shared objective for the entire design team.

Existing materials are being cleverly reused at Kaikukatu, with the crown jewel being the repurposing of exterior windows. With support from Helsinki’s circular economy cluster program, a research project was funded to develop an interior glass partition model using old exterior windows, based on an interior architect’s design. The entire process takes place in the Helsinki metropolitan area, minimizing transport distances. The result is a beautifully crafted, carpentry-style interior glass partition collection that respects the building’s original character.

Katri praises the strong team spirit and ability to meet the project’s ambitious goals. The redevelopment of Hämeentie, a key objective for the city, takes another step forward with the completion of the stunning new Kaikukatu 3!
